Project Description

Avia is a metropolitan center that brings together multiple dimensions of coexistence: commercial space, corporate offices, hotel, convention center and apartments. Due to the planning and magnitude of the project, the slope stabilization of the excavation was carried out in two phases: Phase I (2013) and Phase II (2019).

Solution

The slopes of the “Phase I” excavation were stabilized using Soil Nailing up to a maximum depth of 25.50 meters, this due to the boundaries of the project (streets in 3 boundaries and Avia Phase II). The availability of space provided by the Phase II site, the development of a temporary access ramp that helped to carry out the protection works in an efficient manner.

The slopes of the “Phase II” excavation were protected by anchored walls of up to 120 tons. The excavation had a maximum depth of 28.80 meters; Therefore, there was a height difference of 3.30 meters between both phases. The treatment used to protect the boundary that divided both phases was a 400 mm diameter pile wall. This solution was worked together with the geotechnical consultant and structural designer of the project. The piles were built from the start level of the screen with a crawler mounted small diameter hydraulic drill. This with the aim of streamlining the construction methodology.
